SubjeSubject: Re: Mayflower surnames

Hi, I have been reading the posts about the ancestor' group.  Therhere is a
dispute in my Clark family about the origin of my line.  My grandfather
said we were relalated to George Rogers Clark, he is an uncle.  My father
wrote in a letter that he heard a differennt story, that it is the
Mayflower.

I am in Washington County, PA, right now with a Robert Clark bk b. about
1780 and married to Jeanette(Jane) Paxton and have no idea who his
parents are or where e he is born.  There is also an Andrew M. Clark b.
about 1772 buried in the same cemetery and a cennsus shows they lived in
the same house. Perhaps a brother or cousin of Robert. Robert is my
great-t-great-greatgrandfather and I have all on down but am stuck.  If you
can give me any suggestions II would appreciate it.

I haven't looked at the Clarke on the Mayflower because I understood he
nevnever married.  Is this true to your knowledge?  Also I can find no
connection to the Virginia Clarrk's that George Rogers Clark is from.  his
generation does not seem to children among the boys.  DDiane Smith

ShelbyC on AOL forwarded you request re SAR on to me (as she does
 with all such inquiries).

This is sort of a generic reply - I hope that I cover what you want
to know.  If not please contact me by e-mail.

The following is quoted from a publication I found at National
Headquarters which will answer questions about what it is and why
 join.

"The National Society of the Sons of the American is an organization
of over 26,000 male descendants of the Patriots, who, during the
American Revolution, rendered loyal service to the cause of winning
our independence from England.  Today the SAR consists of 50 state
societies with more than 450 local or regional SAR chapters.

"SAR is founded on a firm commitment to the values of individual
human liberty and dignity that inspired our patriot ancestors. Never
in our nation's history has there been such a grave need as today to
reaffirm and revitalize those values on which our country was
 established.

"The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a like
organization for female descendants of Revolutionary ancestors.

"Both are open organizations that welcome inquiries and applications
for membership from those whose family lines can be traced to lineal
relatives who redered service to the Revolutionary cause."

General information and location of Chapters may be obtained by
 writing to:
  National SAR Headquarters
  1000 South Fourth Street
  Louisville, KY 40203
  502/589-1776

The requirements for SAR and DAR are the same - a direct line (thru
either maternal or paternal side) back to a Patriot Ancestor.  The
1990 edition of the DAR Patriot Index, found in most libraries, is a
good starting point but it is certainly not exhastive.  If you don't
find your Patriot Ancestor in it you just have to research your
Patriot Ancestor's service yourself.  Proof must be furnished to
prove birth, marriage and death for each generation and generations
must be tied together.  The first three generations (you, your
parents and the grandparents you go through) must be proved with
primary sources (birth cert, death cert, marriage cert).  This isn't
as hard as it sounds as in many cases a death certificate will
contain proof of all three items.  Beyond that secondary proof may
be used (census record, printed bound books such as genealogies and
 county histories).

The IGI and AF and such may not be used nor can typescript or
 computer generated books.

Copies of applications of SAR members may be ordered from the above
address.  There is no restriction on ordering and you may either
send $4 with your request or they will bill you at the rate of $1
per page photocopied (minimum $3).  You may specify by Patriot
Ancestor (include birth/death dates/locations, spouse name and the
child descent through - or at least as much as possible) or the name
of a member (provide sufficient details (dates/locations) to
identify as there are thousands of duplicate names).

You may e-mail me your name and s-mail address and I'll try to
locate a Chapter near you.  Give me names of larger towns near you
if you live in a suburb or small town.

And if you have any questions that this generic message hasn't
answered please send me an e-mail at the address below.
